I don't understand how the year for car models work?

So why is it that you can buy a 2014 model in the year 2013? If I went to a car dealership to buy a new car would they give me a 2014 or 2013? I am so confused on all of this

2013 is the year the car was made 2014 is the year the car is put out for sale .So technically your getting a 2014 because the car wasn't out and available in 2013 to drive . The moment a car is out on the market the moment it starts to lose its value .

It's simple: the government needs more money. I suppose these funds are used by the state rather than the national government, but still it's ridiculous. I was a little lucky, considering my car is a very modern looking luxury car from '98, so the registration fee was minimal. I personally feel the DMV is a waste of time. The only think it's useful for is to give you plates for identification purposes. Insurance is also something that I find to be ridiculous. Since I'm 19, my monthly payment for car insurance is almost double of my parents. Another absurd notion to look at is the fact that it is mandatory. I mean really, my parents pay a little over one thousand dollars a year for car insurance. They have never been in an accident, and they have been driving for years. All of that adds up. It's good to have car insurance, don't get me wrong. You never know when a tragedy will strike, and it's better to be safe than sorry. But there are people who barely need to drive, but still need to pay a mandatory car insurance fee. Finally, the roads you drive on are getting more messed up as the years go alone because the hard earned money you put into your vehicle registration etc. is not being used wisely. State governments try and find the causes of some accidents, and they don't know the roads are a huge factor. Some of the lines seperating the lanes where I live are barely visible, and the cracks on the road are just messing my wheels up! You can imagine how difficult it is driving at night in some sections of town. Overall, I think the system is stupid. They charge us for things we shouldn't need to be charged with. What's next? Are they going to make us register bicycles, skateboards, and scooters?

Model year is just a term that Auto Manufactures use to describe their production periods. 2013 vehicles began being manufactured latter in 2012 ... 2014 begins latter in 2013 ... etc.

When the 2014s start showing up at the Dealerships ... the 2013 inventory is still out there but will begin to be depleted over time.

It depends if they are made after a certain part of the year. You could get either one.
