The one thing you did not mention is the version of Word that you are using.
In Word 2013, go to View tab, Show group, and uncheck Gridlines.

Helllo Michael, Be sure the Drawing toolbar is displayed. Click on the Draw menu, then click on Grid, Remove the check for Display Gridlines on Screen. Finally, click OK Hope this helps, d.tcom
