While its in a pot it needs a good quality potting mix. When you plant it in the ground it needs garden soil. The method of water transport is different in the ground than in a pot so you need different types of growing medi in each situation.
Dogwoods like a nice rich soil, slightly acid, plenty of water, semi shade.
