how can I determine which CV joint is going bad?

97 Civic. I had the passenger side axle rebuilt a couple years ago but didn't touch the driver's side one. I'm now hearing bad sounds that indicate another CV issue but I can't determine which side I'm hearing it on. I lifted up the front wheels and put the car in gear to try to get a closer listen but still no dice.

My only thought is to drive around for a while and then use a laser pointer thermometer to take the temperature of each CV joint and hope one is significantly hotter than the rest. Any guess whether this will work? Any other suggestions?

btw I also suspected wheel bearings. The driver's side had a very slight sound and roughness when I removed the brake caliper and spun it. I replaced it and there's no change to the sound while I'm driving. I think it was just some rust caught up between the hub and surround.

Look for a busted CV boot. That is a tell tale sign. If not have someone stand outside the car while you turn in a circle one way , then the other. They should easily hear the side that's clicking. Wheel/hub bearings will roar going down the road. If you are going straight down a flat road and you veer right some and the roaring is louder replace the left front bearing. If it is louder going to the left replace the right front bearing if the roar is the same veering left or right the replace both front bearings.Do this when you replace the axle and you will save some money on the labor because some of it is duplicated. Hope this helps

Put your hand on the shaft and try to move it. The one that move a lot and loose at the U joint is the bad one. You can also check it while it's making noise but you'll need a helper to be in the car.
