why does yahoo not care about (specifically) it's users?
Yahoo would not exist without it's users. Although it is a legacy provider; I've been using it's services for getting on for 14 years (so I'm a legacy user! *smile*), so why does it seem to not care at all what it's users want?
(for example, my mail/inbox facility worked fine right up until I was 'forced' [force was used] to swap to the 'new' yahoo they had been pushing for ages, and now I can't navigate my inbox properly and instead of having troubles with the search engine, I now just rx a standard 'We're sorry but we cannot... blah blah blah... the mail you searched for'. Why have something that worked, that people were happy to use, and replace it with something that does not, that many people have and I imagine, are complaining about. Certainly be silent, ignore us, that is definitely good business practice).
As I said, I'm just curious.

They may care if we are vocal enough. We have to try to convince them to reinstate Yahoo Classic Mail as an option. Please complain, fight, protest any way you can. There is a petition at http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/yahoomailcla... You can complain directly to Yahoo's Board of Directors at http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/contactBoard.cf... Let them know this issue pertains to the Board because they should be concerned about maintaining the value of the company for shareholders. You can try to call Customer Support (1-866-562-7219 or 1-800-318-0612 ), but they may just say they have a high volume of calls and disconnect. I'm hoping the high volume is complaints about the new Yahoo Mail! Complain through feedback if you can; they keep disconnecting links so they lead to 404 errors, but they must accept feedback somewhere---here if nowhere else. Complain on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/YahooMail and Tweet at https://twitter.com/yahoomail or the horrible CEO/designer of the NewPooMail, Marissa Mayer, at https://twitter.com/marissamayer. There's also https://twitter.com/YahooMailFAIL there, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hate-the-new-Yahoo-... , and currently 112 pages of Yahoo Classic users' complaints about the New Yahoo Mail at http://amplicate.com/hate/yahoo-mail where you can vent your feelings. Be sure to sign the petition and spread the word. The only way we can get Classic back is if we fight for it, but it's worth it!
If anyone is in the position you were in but has not yet yielded to Yahoo's force, not yet switched because they don't want the new mail, you can still access your email through the mobile site (but on a regular computer) by following the directions in this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iToXGF9XXG0 This is how I have been accessing my mail. It's bizarre, but it works, and it's better than doing what Yahoo says just because they're strongarming us.

I see where some on this site believe I work for Yahoo because of the below answer...I am 72 and I can assure you I do not work for them...below is my honest opinion. I might also add that we ALL started on Yahoo at one time....It was a learning process that we had to go through...We got through it and liked it..Starting with a new format is tougher for some of us, but we out here will help you through it...
I have to admit that I did not like the New version when it first came out. Like me, if you just give it a chance and learn how it works, you will like it as much as the Classic. The below links should help.

Classic version is no longer available. You now have the New version or the Basic version of it. In addition...ALL of your emails are on one page. The best way I have found to scroll down through them is to place your pointer in the scroll box on the right side and ONE click to move your emails down/up one page and either holding down the pointer with the left click of your mouse or RAPIDLY clicking on the mouse to move the emails up/down RAPIDLY.

If you want to go to a "basic" version (not Classic which is gone) then select mail options under the gear icon in the upper right. On the "general" options page scroll to the bottom. There you have a choice of "full featured" or "basic". Click on SAVE when done. If you decide on the Basic format some features will be missing...open this link for details....

Note: for you that like only so many emails per page...use this. I do not see where you can determine how many per page, but you will have 25 per page(that is what I have)AND you will have page OPTIONS. Some users have indicated they can access their account to change how many per page, but I do not have it...
Note: I have seen that this is the format you should use if you have a slow/old computer. In some cases you can only access Basic because of certain browsers (old ones)and if the account older is not 13 years of age.

There is one option in the New format if you want fewer emails per page..starting with six...Hover your pointer over the GEAR...upper right...then MAIL OPTIONS...then place a check mark in the box left of "Enable Preview Pane" and click on SAVE...Once the screen is up you can increase the number of emails displayed by placing your cursor on the line just below the list(goes left to right)click and hold down the left click of your mouse and drag it down. Even though you have a few less emails than the normal view.....You will still have to scroll down through all your emails as they are ALL still on ONE page.
