Brits, please explain "A-Levels" and "GSCEs" to we, Yanks.?

I see references to these, but don't know what they mean. (I'm trying to understand the British school system).

They are both Certificates of Education

GCSEs - Basic Secondary Education Certificate you can get. Taken during Middle School

A-Levels - Three or More subjects that you take in High School that you need for entrance to University/College. This is equivalent to US GPA, SATs, IB, AP
