freezing an oil painting?
A child that I love found an oil painting at a yard sale and bought it for me for a present.
I fear bed bugs and do not shop yard sales.
If I freeze the oil painting for two weeks then I am sure that the bed bugs are dead.
Big Problem, and the question; What is going to happen to the painting? I want the child to see it in my home. So as home done as it is I want to hang it. Not ruin it. can I freeze it with out harm?
Thanks Caleb, it is just paint and no glaze.
But to let you know about bed bugs, they can tolerate hot or cold places and no food for a year and a half and remain dormant. They can fit into any place that is the thickness of a credit card, so the folds of the canvas onto the frame.
But also thank you. Because you did answer my question, this bunch of sunflowers has no glaze only the paint, and no frame only the board it is matted onto. I don't know what to call the inside frame that the canvas is stretched over. that is what I referred to as a frame. sorry

Eh, I wouldn't. If there are any thin top surfaces (i.e. a glaze) it's prone to cracking. If it's thick all the way, go for it. As for the bed bugs, I wouldn't worry about it. But if you do, Just put in a dry clean place for a while to make sure. Better yet, just (assuming it's in a frame) undress the painting and get a new frame. If there are any bed bugs, you can (and will, if you try or not) get rid of them.

The other two answers are good but I was wondering if you have thought of spraying a thick coat of varnish. That should kill any sort of bugs.

Hi bugsie, I found a link that might be somewhat useful: http://painting.about.com/od/oilpaintingfaq/f/free...
basically freezing will make your painting weak or damage it
