I hate to ask this but my 17 year old boy wants to build a motorized bike.?

I hope Zeus, god of bicycles and Saint Prudent, patron of drivers and Virgin Mary of Dorleta, holly patroness of bicyclists in distress forgive me but my son want to do a father and son project involving a motorized bike contraction. A sin on my views. But I can't say no to a father and son (son and father, rather) project. So help me out. How can I accomplish this thing? Any worthy kits? Any recommended frames? He wants and old timer looking bike. The objective is for the two of us to spend time in the shop building something as he wants to study engineering and he is a hands on kind of guy. The goal is not to ride fast and not at all eliminate pedaling. The thing may never be used. The purpose is to build it, and the male bonding thingy. So the purpose is to build it for the beauty of it, like a piece of art. It will be great if it works even if it is not practical. He is into robotic building and competitions and has some other machines built like a feeder for the fish tank and so.

I know this is too long for Wle's short attention spam to read, so don't read, I will answer for you:

Wle: Blah blah blah

Update:

Thanks Wle , anyway. I know that. I know how to google too. I am asking for someone that has any hands-on experience with this kind of project. Someone that has something personal to share. I am not asking for the cookie answer response: google it or go to your bike shop. I know I will end up in my two local bike shops, they know me from countless other projects.

Update 2:

Btw, I have seen some kits already in the web. A motor, a carburetor, a coil, a chain, a rear sprocket, throttle control, gas tank, cables, brackets, some have a crank included.... That is about it. Not a million parts.

I personally use Staton Inc. I prefer 4 stroke Japanese engines. For the look you're going for I recommend EZ Motorbikes. With these kits you get what you're willing to pay for not all of them are junk. Before you buy anything look up your local laws on motorized bicycles/mopeds. Many states consider them to be the same thing. I've got the only gas powered bicycle in the world which shifts 5 gears automatically. As for the bike use a steel frame hard tail one. They're less prone to cracking. Don't use coaster brakes. Suspension forks and seat post help also.

Here is how you can build a 3 speed automatic. Get a kit from EZ Motorbikes with a shiftkit, a Shimano Nexus 3 speed hub and a Kilduff auto shifter. Then you'll have a bike like no other in the world. You can go to motorbicycling.com and motoredbikes.com for help you can also contact me on either one. I live in Tennessee and have heart problems, motorized bicycles gave me a way to keep riding.

Sounds like a fun project. It will be more of an engineering challenge, so start by deciding what you want to accomplish, and if there is a budget for parts what amount that is. Set a loose construction schedule for ordering parts, assembling, welding, painting, etc.

Decide if you want a 2 stroke or 4 stroke motor. Decide on the gearing. Most kits have only one gear, but some use multiple speed gearing. You might even decide to use a 100cc Chinese motorcycle motor (complete with clutch and transmission, but that might be illegal ( but interesting).

I saw a super complex bicycle/motorcycle in Los Angeles made with scrap bicycle parts, a true "rat rod" that really worked.

My efforts at a motorized bicycle were not very successful. I used a 2 cycle kit with a friction drive. The motor was too loud, the friction wheel slipped on the rear tire, and the 2 cycle vibration was not comfortable. Now I stick to building bicycles only, but the engineering challenges of adding a motor, and perhaps making a piece of movable art are still appealing.

I'll answer this as though you might be either an a. Older sibling, or b. A parent of the lady. But however you recognize her, the reply may be the equal. Individually, it really depends on the men and women involved. A three 12 months age hole is nothing - nonetheless, talking from personal expertise, i do know that him being authorized & her being underage, is going to motive a situation. Also, that he'll quickly be competent to (if he is not already) go out to golf equipment, & ingesting with mates and so on. Whereas she has as a minimum 4 years to wait. If the girl is living at dwelling, she may have principles that he mainly will not have ie. Curfews and she will most certainly need to "record" to her mothers and fathers about the place she's going, who she's going with & that style of factor. The fellow, being virtually 18, normally is not going to have such strict restrictions positioned on him, as he's close to an adult. Of path, i'm generalising. The fellow may be particularly respectful of the girl's desires & these of her mother and father, usually will still exit but now not put strain on her to go too, or try to force intercourse. The woman could also be highly figuring out that he is an adult, & "boys will be boys" & now not get jealous if he goes out without her. Like I said earlier than, it particularly relies on all of the different contributing motives - the persons, the cultural heritage, the foundation of the relationship & the historical past - have they recognized every different all their lives? Grew up collectively? Or only met a week ago? If they treat every different correct & respect the differences that a authorized / underage relationship presents, you should be completely happy that she's determined any one so excellent! Expectantly it'll be a protracted & loving relationship. If they are together for the flawed reasons, the variations will finally push them apart. Just go together with it & be there when she inevitably needs a shoulder to cry on. Excellent good fortune.

  • Before you worry too much about a kit, make sure to see what your son is up for and take stock of the tools you have to work with, or even that he does. Robotics and competitions sounds a little like FIRST to me, but I'm prejudiced there, lol. Most of the students on my FRC team are more than capable of machining parts that make me go "Huh. I didn't think of that." and a lot of the teens on robotics teams I've noticed are more like mad scientists and engineers trapped in a teenaged body. All the enthusiasm and creativity, and likely to discover lunatic out of the box ways around techniques that they simply haven't learned yet.

If he's hands-on and going into engineering a kit might take some of the fun out of it, but you'll probably end up with one even if it's just for components. Try spending some time on hackaday.com, there may be some relevant content and even if there's not, what is there is more than enough to get even a mild-mannered father's inner mad scientist thinking. Most importantly, have fun brainstorming and arguing over how things need to be done.

    And wear safety glasses.

    :)

At 16 my sister helped me buy a 80cc motorbike for $100. That was many years ago but I took it apart over the Winter and repainted it. I rode it to the shop to show the guy and he offered me a job on the spot. Worked there during high school and weekends.

At 17 your son should be past the moped stage and on to motorbikes. On the other hand there are many bike kits available on line.

Your quote " A sin on my views." so nothing will make you happy ?

Really an interesting project. Hope you success.

I love bike, but only limited knowledge.

may be bikers on bikermeets com can help you! They are all experienced.

    internet has kits

    they are all crappy

may work out fine if he won;t ride it

    they have a million parts

    wle

    EDIT

Btw, I have seen some kits already in the web. A motor, a carburetor, a coil, a chain, a rear sprocket, throttle control, gas tank, cables, brackets, some have a crank included.... That is about it. Not a million parts.

===also a fiber sprocket for the other side of the back wheel, clutch/starter lever, hoses, clamps, screws, ==

go ahead, it doesn;t matter to me

    then they vibrate and stink

and usually people put them on bikes without decent brakes, going 40 mph with 50 extra lbs

    wle

Source(s): EDIT anyway i say it;s complicated and kludgy but if you want an ''engineering project'' it should be perfect wle
