Decent cheap area close to Chicago?

I'm looking for a decent (safe) town with cheap single family- or multi-family homes within 30-40 minutes commute of northern Chicago.

    Consider the following north and northwest suburbs:

    Niles

    Morton Grove

    Mt Prospect

    Harwood Heights

    Norridge

    Des Plaines

    Wheeling

    PS: There are no nice "cheap" suburbs of Chicago. Cheap suburbs in northeastern Illinois are slum suburbs.

    There are no cheap areas close to Chicago. But of course, that depends on your definition of cheap.

    Northwest Indiana like Munster or highland or even St. John Indiana. Lower taxes more jobs and better government in Indiana.
