    The sum of the remote interior angles is equal to the exterior angle

    (2y^2 + 7) + (61 - y^2) = 117

    Combine like terms

    y^2 + 68 = 117

    Subtract 68 from both sides

    y^2 = 49

    Take the square root of both sides

    y = ±7

    Since the y term was squared in both interior angles both -7 and 7 are valid solutions
