What would you have done?

I was laid off from a job due to the company "going in a different direction" (their words). They were pleasant about it, and gave me severance pay. However, a week later, they called me needing help and asking questions about a file I was working on. I also found out that same day, they hired from what I heard an attractive young lady to do the same job (I am 40+ year old male.....I know hard to believe..but it is true...)

So would you have helped, or ignored the call?

I would have asked them for a letter of reference in exchange for answering questions about a job I was fired from.

they hired someone younger, less experienced, & cheaper than you.

but good luck proving an age discrimination case.

if they were offering to pay you for your time helping them straighten things out then I would done it but if they were expecting you to do it for free then I would have politely told them, "I'm sorry, I no longer work there."

if you were hoping to use them for a reference then in order to not burn bridges then I might have answered their questions over the phone provided they weren't too difficult to answer. something that involves a lot of hand holding would require payment.
