Recommended replacement interval for motorcycle toothed belt is...?
... how much time or mileage, generally, for the rear wheel? Specifically for the BMW F800GT? Is it just "as needed" if the belt starts to delaminate? Looks like the BMW belt is $440. Ouch! Are they all that expensive? (Sorry... I've never owned a belt drive bike.)

Basically it's just 'as needed'.
A lot depends on how you use it or abuse it, like riding in a lot of muddy conditions than not cleaning it up afterward.
My friend at BMW says a belt should last to about 50K under normal street riding.

If it's de-laminating, it's far past time for a swap.
It varies widely - depending on riding conditions (rocks and other debris can puncture or damage the belt), how hard it is being ridden, whether it is properly adjusted, etc.
It's unfortunate that it is so expensive - but that's part of owning a BMW. I ditched chains and belts years ago - my last two bikes have been shaft drive, and I've never been happier.
