Aussies, how can people afford?

fast food? Have just collected Mr P from the airport and we thought we would have take away for dinner. 3 pieces of KFC each about the size of a tablespoon, small mashed potatoes some gravy and 20 fries and a teeny weeny bread roll.. Yes I did count the fries. Cost....$10.95. I can get a whole cooked chook for $9.00 down at Woolies. How do families afford to take their kids to these places? We went through the drive through but the seating area looked quite full.

It would be close to 25 years since I last had KFC and it will be more than another 25 years before I have it again.

Update:

Don't be such a smartie, Traveller. After a long flight the last thing my husband wanted was to go to a restaurant. There was still an hour and a half drive home from the airport.

Besides, where we ate was not my point, the cost of "convenience" food was. If you had read the whole Q you would logically guess that we do not access fast food outlets on a regular basis.

Update 2:

@ Traveller. FYI, if it is any of your business I had a casserole cooked at home waiting to be reheated.

HE CHOSE TO HAVE KFC. FIRST TIME IN 25 YEARS, HE HAD A URGE TO HAVE SOME KFC. Move on now.

Update 3:

@ Traveller. Ok ...I give you the last word. You are obviously about 12 yrsand know everything.

It's not only KFC. Maccas and fish and chips are also expensive. If you took a family of four it would certainly add up to over $30 dollars. After airline food you need a fill up, so I can see why it was so tempting. Once in a while isn't a crime, every day, now that's when you would have to wonder.

Good question. I bought KFC here in Vietnam last night. The good thing about this place is they let you choose what parts you want. I hate thighs and legs and usually get the breast, half rib and the wings. They're having a special at the moment. 6 pieces for 99'000 dong. ($5.75 Aust.) I got 6 pieces, I king size french fries, 1 jumbo potato and gravy, and one large Pepsi for 200'000 dong ($11 Aust.) Looking at what you paid its not as cheap as I thought it would be given 80% of the country earn $100-$150 a month. Fast food is really taking off over here. Starbucks is always crowded when I go to Saigon, there are KFCs everywhere, Lotteria, Gloria Jeans, Pizza Hut, and now McDonald's is about to open its first franchise.

$11.00 for 3 pieces of chicken and mashed spuds is ridiculous. Especially when a sit down meal at an Asian restaurant costs about $20/pp.

Even any club is comparatively cheaper, or as the so very rude Traveller of the Skies mentioned, a pub meal.

Yet people still go there! Incomprehensible really.

Everything sold at the airport costs an arm and a leg - even KFC. If you want cheap fast food then buy it on the way home and not in the airport mall.

open door: it's marketing that attracts customer, in the case of fast food mainly kids and youngsters. to me the question is: can we agree with the terrible quality? me, i haven't eaten at a mac in maybe 12 or 13 years. i did go to some similar, burger king or something, the other day and it was terrible. mi left a half eaten cheese burger to the rats under the tables. nut my daughter thinks the food is good because she gets a toy or what.

When you think about it, you can't really cook some chicken and mashed spuds and make gravy and chips plus wash up for $11.

Granted, the food will likely give ya a heart attack but you did get it nice and quick.

    I guess i'm a braindead saddo.

Yet KFC will make only a tiny profit from the sale because we have some of the highest wages and taxes in the world.

You can only afford that chicken at Woolies because they have those "self-service" checkouts, if they still had actual people on the checkouts it would cost $14

Imagine taking a family out to that place for a meal. I don't know how parents can afford to. I certainly can't and both my partner and I have good jobs. We limit our eating out to a local Italian or Vietnamese restaurant once/month.

I thought today was cheap Tuesday and you could get 9 pieces of chicken for like 10 bux?

It's not something you buy everyday. It's obviously bought at times when you obviously can't make your own food. I never buy take away, except when I travel down to Sydney - which is three hours from my own kitchen!
