How do you ask for cake like PAN in Mexico?
I am in a small town in Mexico and I am looking for pastry that is more like pound cake. What I see most of all is danish like, cookie -ish flat bread pastry... I want some that is springy like cake.
How would I go about asking for something like in this in Spanish?

In Mexico cake is called pastel. The closest thing to poundcake is called panque and we pronounce it pahn-KAY.

I was going to answer this question earlier, but my wife who is from Mexico, knows
more than I do about these things, and see took off with her friend for a while.
She says it is called pieza de pan or torta esponjosa. I also found another word which is also sexual
in nature, which is probably only used sometimes in place of this cake pan, namely bizcocho(s).
Here are a few examples here for you to check out: http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=torta+esponjos...

You could ask for Postre , Pan Dulce or Panocha (Without a smirk on your face) In a Small town you may only be able to buy what you see. Be carefull with Panocha it means something else and it is sexual in nature. It is delicious though. Panela is also eaten in Mexico.

;Edit Guz mentioned the Sponge type you may be looking for. Pieza or Pedazo de Torta de Esponjosa...........May not be in your small town but is popular at Bodas, Quince anos and all sorts of Family gatherings.
Too sweet for me!
