I need help understanding my health care deductible?

I'm on the healthcare.gov website, and am in the process of choosing a health insurance plan.

I just need help understanding deductibles. The plan I want to choose has a $6,300 deductible - does that mean I have to pay SIX GRAND before they'll cover even one visit to a primary physician?

Maybe, maybe not. It depends on if the plan has co-pays subject to the deductible or not. Some plans do, and some plans don't. Some plans will have a set amount that you pay. Some plans will limit you to 3 or so visits for that set amount and others will have unlimited visits. Some plans will also have a separate deductible for prescriptions or different access fees.

You'll want to ask these questions of your agent because if you sign up for a plan that isn't right for you you are stuck for an entire year before you can change plans. The agent will not charge you anything for their service.

You pay a set amount for a visit to a primary care physician and another amount for a specialist.

The deductible is for anything other than office visits.

Correct. The deductible is how much you pay, out of pocket, before the insurance starts kicking in.

One checkup a year is excluded from that, but you WILL have free birth control, and maternity benefits.
