How to get a fried taste when grilling? I am making an Indian fritter like snack consisting of crushed soak?

Softened lentils mixed with finely chopped onions, chillies and spices. The mixure is moulded into small compressed balls and deep fried. Someone suggested grilling instead of frying for health reasons. I tried-taste is not the same-huge difference. Any suggestions on how to grill this but obtain a fried like taste? The snack is called Masala Vada

Toss them in oil and "fry" them on a piece of tinfoil or a hot plate
