gyroscope spinning tool?

So I have a science lab grade gyroscope which is just a rod with a spinnable disc about it's center. And I was wondering if anyone knows where to find the tool that is used to spin the disc up. Or does anyone know what it's called. I believe it looks like a small power grinder and it's just a wheel that you use to spin up the disc.

    I always use a piece of nylon fishing line.

    If the axle is 1mm radius and the disk is 25 mm radius,

    pulling the cord at just 5 m/s

    gives

    w 0.001 = 5

    w = 5000

    or about 1000 turns per second ( 60000 rpm )

    Which is incredibly fast. In general the forces on the cord would break it if you attempted to accelerate the disk this much.

    But it does illustrate what is possible even without fancy equipment.
