    A hemorroid, or multiple hemorroids.

They are veins that due to strain, bulge out in the lower part of the colon. Most remain internal, but sometimes lower ones can protrude outside the anus, also hemorroids can burst and bleed.

They are nowhere near as serious as once they were, as modern treatments can remove them without actual surgical intervention.

They can become very inflamed and extremely uncomfortable, so if you ever have them, see a specialist. There are creams and suppositories can give relief, but removal is the best option. However you will probably find the specialist will then wish to do a colonoscopy, to ensure there are not more serious issues in the colon. That generally means a day admission to hospital, with a follow- up visit for results. The colonoscopy is the best way to detect possible cancers or pre- cancerous polyps, and the specialist can remove them at the same time.

So if you develop hemorroids, see to them!

It is believed high fibre foods can prevent them, but I think I for one would not believe that is the full answer. There are also hereditary links.

Hemorrhoids (pronounced "hem"-"o"-"roids"). Surely you've heard at least one commercial for them. One of the many joys of aging.

You really want to know? OK, here you go. Enjoy.
