Just got my first HDTV - what else do I need to buy to get it going?
Hello - I just got an LED HDTV - my first one - it replaces an old 27" beast. I use Verizon FiOS for cable TV and have their DVR as a reception box. Can anyone suggest a list of other things I will need to buy to get the TV going. Such as, special connection cables to my DVR box? Or different cables to hook up my DVD player? Special surge suppressor?
Thanks in advance for the advice.
The TV is an LG 47" model if that helps.

Make sure that your Verizon serevice is also up graded to HD. Use HDMI cable for the best picture and sound. You should add a Blu Ray disc player (Panasonic the most reliable player in the market). You may also up grade you sound system. For a budget minded, look at an Onkyo HT-S 3500, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. You can connect you tv audio to this unit and along with any other device. Stay away from any of those home theater in a box. You may want to go online to Home Theater Magzine, which is now Sound and Vision and read the reviews on all products for your home theater. Hope this will help you out.

You'll want HDMI cables to connect the TV, cable box, and DVR. I take it that you got a HiDef box from FIOS to go with your new TV, right ?
You don't indicate whether you want, or have, a surround sound system and a video disc player to go with your TV.
The aforementioned Onkyo system is a good entry level unit, but you might also look at buying the receiver and the speaker set separately. Good makes include Pioneer, Harman Kardon, Yamaha and Denon for a receiver, and Infinity, Polk, JBL and Klipsch for speakers. Avoid, at all costs, both anything by Bose (Total overpriced junk) and any and all all-in-one systems where the disc player is in the same case as the receiver.
