1997 sable wont turn over and wont shift out of park?

tou need a new battery ..... a very wise investment is a SEARS battery charger == that unit is compacy and powerful and the one that I have does have a "car start booster" == it is well worth having , even if you only use it occasionally == size of unit is just larger than 1/2 a computer zipper carry case -- cost is under $100.00 ...... the reason your battery failed is because of the cold snap and the battery was already weak ... get some better battery cables --- battery cables work two ways .. 1st they carry power to start the car and then 2nd then car is on and running and the charging system sends power back to the battery ...... most all factory battery cables are small gauge wire and are not adequate gauge for their proper function AND you should buy a ground strap to secure a proper ground of the motor to the car body [[[ ask you favorite auto mechanic or the parts counter dude at AutoZone or O'Reilley's for more info and direction to good parts === SEARS is a good place to buy a battery and they might install it for free if you ask ...........

replace battery should take care of it as the metal plates corrode in the battery over time and fail to make contact one day or the next day they may work again cold or hot i had same issue with my honda couple years ago I hope this helps
