the purpose of the Revelation was to warn the seven churches of Asia about their impending tribulation at the hands of the Romans

the western empire had collapsed and the eastern empire based at Constantinople was in the works

God was warning the churches there to expect this and to be strong in his might - to persevere

He knew that many would be martyred for his sake and he was reassuring them that they would inherit eternal life as a reward for their faithfulness

so it provided incentive for them and in that regard it was an exhortation towards martyrdom - if need be

Mat 10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Rev 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

It's not. Jesus flat out says 'flee to the mountains.'

    Or perhaps just nonsense.
