Is South African Nelson Mandela so important in the US that there will be a national holiday...?

I hope not because Nelson Mandela was only associated with South Africa. He was a terrorist jailed in the 1960s for crimes against the state. But when the political wind changed in 1990 the president of SA, F.W. de Clerk, decided to let him out and give black people the vote. So if anyone deserves our adulation right now it's surely de Clerk - not Mandela. Without de Clerk's intervention Mandela would have died in jail and SA would still be an apartheid nation.

Of course. There are a huge amount of African Americans who see him as an icon, although he had connection to communism. Liberals also quite like him.

Having a national holiday every year is a bit much.

Why would you even think that?

Is there a Ghandi holiday or Mother Teresa in the US?
