Mandela was more of a moral leader during his time in prison, which is important, but its only moral power that he had, and Obama has the practical problems of governance in a time when the economy is bad, and people are very divided and the government is divided.

By the time Mandela was president, he had a considerable reputation behind him. Obama didn't, it would be hard indeed to replicate the influence and almost awe that Mandela inspired in other.

South African could have sunk into a bloodbath, that it didn't was thanks to Mandela.

Obama hasn't had that kind of thing to deal with, something huge and noble, he's had petty carping, and met with Republican blind obedience to cant and rhetoric of their party. You can't lead a people who refuse to be led, and are fed lies about why they shouldn't respect either the man or the office.

And we are not a better people for that.

Obama. He never led an arm uprising against the government. Obama never told people to kill based on race. Obama never spent time in jail. Obama is far more intelligent. Obama is the leader of the greatest nation in the free world. Mandela became president of a wrecked socially dysfunctional country by default. He knew he was not qualified to be a world leader declining to run for a second term.

Lets see. Thirty years later your asking about Mandela, and likely have a positive view of his accomplishments. Where do you think Obama's popularity will be in the same time?

@Par4... No, Obama orders others to do the killing for him. ... Then doesn't have the stomach to deal with the consequences. Instead, he takes Reggie Love to go play Spades.

Mandela. He did a better job of uniting a much more divided society.

Obama. Only because he hasn't personally killed anyone, it sure isn't because of his leadership skills.
