I need help identifying a seed pod. It grows with many on the stalk, and when dried rattles.?

Each pod is about a centimeter in diameter. There were probably 50 or more on one small stalk. The pods are light beige, and look like little dragon's eggs. The seeds inside are roundish and black. I'd love to know what it is, so I can plant some. I have tried planting the seeds from the pods, but they must be too old, they won't grow.

I'm guessing Columbine. You can look up a picture of it. Most varieties today are hybrids and won't reproduce by seeds.

Those are Rattle Bush Plants. Lol, I love those things! First time I ever saw one I was amused with it for hours and I called them Rattle Snake Plants, but their actual name is Rattle Bush. They are a weed and many grow in Northern California. If plants seeds are over one year old, that decreases their chance of germination.
