What do I do with my registration paper when I sell my car in California?
I'm selling my car, and I know I have to hand over the title, turn in the release of liability paper and have a bill of sale. But what do I do with my registration paper? Do I give it to them or return it to the DMV? Same goes with the colored sticker with the year? It's my first time selling a car so I'm not sure what I have to do.

You throw away the registration paper(because it has you name and address on it) and leave the sticker on the car.

Do the buyer a favor and give them your proof of current registration. There is no reason not to. The buyer then will not need to register the vehicle until the end of the registration period. It's the kind thing to do. As long as you submit the release of liability directly after the date of the sale your responsibility and liability for the vehicle will have ceased.

Destroy them and throw them away. They are useless once you sell the car. Call the DMV and VOID the tag so if anyone finds it they can't use it. But you should cut it up and throw it away so it can't be reused.
