Are teacup/mini dogs bred to not bark?

My ex girlfriend teacup yorkie never barked and my sister just got a teacup shih tzu and that also doesn't bark. I am contemplating getting a small dog, one that doesn't bark a lot. I am eyeing a pure bred maltese at the moment but maybe a teacup yorkie is they don't bark.

Yes, I know there's no such thing as a teacup.

I've read that you train dogs to not bark. How effective is it?

Any suggestions for apartment dogs? Small to medium size

There is no dog that was specifically bred not to bark, however some are less vocal than others. I suggest you do some more research on apartment-friendly breeds that are less vocal. Breeds of the "toy" group are generally quieter than most others. The maltese is in the toy group, among many others.

A "teacup" is simply dog is smaller than its breed standard size, which usually means it is poorly bred, has a crap gene pool, and will very likely develop expensive health issues down the line, or simply die young. Anyone who uses the word "teacup" is essentially scamming you for your money. It's not as simple as "they are not a real breed". If you buy anything called a "teacup", what you are doing is actually supporting cruel and selfish breeding practices for sickly runts not worth a cent. Please educate yourself before you waste your money as your friends did.

My daughters dog was an apartment dog, was also a golden lab cross. Didn't bark inside, seldom outside, she got lucky and found a pup that came from a home not a lets make some money breeder. The dog was secure and did't have any neurotic problems that come from back yard breeders that don't know and don't care for anything but the money. It's not so much the breed, size or age of the dog as much as the training of the dog.

On the other hand I have hand reared puppies that do nothing but yap and bark but by 4 months old learn that it is not encouraged,

You need to focus on your lifestyle, how active of a dog you want. Will you be home on time to let it out? People don't think that 8 hours is all that long, but in actuality it's from the last time you took the dog out, plus 15 minutes to leave the house, 30 minutes to get to work, half hour for inch, half hour to get home, 10 hours later..... dog is not hyper cuz your home... Dancing the potty dance, another 15 minutes to get back in the house to take him or her out.... Oops, someone just sprung a leek. Try it for a challenge some day, get up, use the facilities, get remedy for work, go to work, hold it all day long till you get back home then you can have your break. Same thing goes for dogs, they can't let themselves out. Have not heard of toilet training a dog wither like you can do for a cat.

My last trip through the kill shelter I was dumbfounded to see how many dogs under 6 months old were on death row. It made me sick to think these were all at one time someone's beloved pet. Never really given the chance to become a good canine companion to somebody, their crimes, chewing on a couch leg, pooping in the house once, scratching and clawing at its owner when they came home. Now because of the high dog population they are scheduled to die, and yes the "teacup" and small breeds are there, their crimes, barking, not healthy, costs too much to care for, doesn't come when called, can't afford the groomer etc. yorkiepoo's, pugapoo, doxiepoo.

The new designer dogs are not exempt.

In you want someone to go jogging with a maltise, yorkies, pugs, short legged dogs cannot keep up a 6 mile jog. Keep this in mind when choosing. Also try several shelters, as well as breed rescues if. Know what kind of dog you are interested in,not only will you save a life, but they are usually socialized, and have a good start on basic training.

    Good luck in your search

Added note, people help me out with this. I believe there is a no bark breed, African basenji?

    No such thing

Teacup dogs are sickly runts bred by BYBers and mills and never live long. They do bark. All dogs bark

no, they are not bred to "not bark"

evidently your ex and your sister both took the time to train the dogs and keep them exercised and mentally stimulated so that they don't bark

Small dogs are notorious yappers.. and the main reason is because people often fail to treat their small dogs like dogs.. the dogs bark and yap because they are bored, untrained and unsocialised.

Training is effective if you are consistent and use a method that works with that particular dog.

All dogs bark. Her dogs, I guess, just happen to be quiet.

As for apartment dogs, do some research, so what you like and what meets your lifestyle. Are you active, like to hike & jog or are you a couch potato? What kind of grooming are you willing to do or are you willing to pay a groomer every 6 weeks.

There are many more questions you need to answer before decideing on what's good for you.

Just because a dog is small, does not necessarily mean it's good for an apartment.

No. By the way there is no true breed of "teacup" dogs. These dogs are usually born with a lot of health problems.
