Jesus is not God, Jesus Christ is the Son of God that God sent down to Earth to be Crucified for our sins.

I think it's for more than one reason.
1) Jesus was doing what the Father wanted him to do. The relationship of son and Father in the case of the Messiah was presented in Jesus' time. The role is servant, or as some say, "The Suffering (or Perfect) Servant", but the suffering part actually refers to the events leading up to the persecution. He played that role not as God, but as the servant.
2) He wanted us to read what he said while praying. This isn't true in all cases, but we have some parts of the Gospels showing us what Jesus talked to the Father about. Some of those things show the kinds of things we might pray about, and also what was important to Jesus and the Father enough to be praying about it. I can learn how to pray better when I pay attention to the details.
I'm thinking there are more reasons, I'm just not thinking of them right now.

He prayed to his Father because his Father is his God.

He was praying in his human state. The Godhead is made up of 3 persons - Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

He prayed because Jesus was a human being not God the spirit and did not possess the gifts that God the spirit has.

In the beginning he walked the earth as a man created by God the father. The holy trinity speaks of the father, son, and spirit as one after his death and the resurrection has taken place..

While on the earth, He was flesh, but His spirit is God.
Ask yourself, how big is your spirit or soul. God said if you see Him you would die, which lends itself to think that you are capable of seeing God in the spirit, but not in the limits of a physical man. Jesus was completely man, born of a woman, or He could not live and die as a man. Yet, He set aside His God ability in order to be this sacrifice. Read scripture and you can easily see this. Start in Philippians 2.

Because God the Father is greater than God the Son
Jhn 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
