Why do my cats still insist on having me let them out of the house even after I put in a kitty door?

Are they just wanting me to dote on them? I keep checking the passage to see if there is some bad odor or something else that would make them not want to use it but it's fine.

Update:

I have two. One doesn't mind using the kitty door to come back inside but the other will only use it when I'm out of town and he has no other way to get to his food and water.

Update 2:

Excellent suggestions. I'll try teaching the older cat to use his head to open the door and I'll also try thoroughly washing both sides. I suspect something did use the kitty door when I was out of town because the older kitty gets spooked every time he hears the door open and close and he's not afraid of the younger kitty at all. We have raccoons that prowl at night. Are cats afraid of raccoons? Also a big mean cat that both of them fight with when he gets into the yard. Maybe I need to wash the doors every time I come back from out of town. Thanks for your input Armageddon and Terry!

It may be that another animal has used the kitty door. A possum moved into our garage and slept in a cat bed with the cats. He also ate cat litter.Ew.

We should have kept him for that alone . Sometimes other cats will come in to get food and frighten your kitties.

You may need to assure your kitty he is safe. Wash the door with vinegar.Give him treats when he uses the door.

I think many cats do this. They just find walking through an open door easier and more comfortable.

They also like being waited on a bit... it's true what they say: Dog have owners; cats have servants.
