What kind of winter business could I start.?

Hi I run a tree service for 8 months of the year, now snow has come and I am bored out of my mind, I have considered starting a roll off bin company, but would like to know what kind of winter businesses could one start, and make decent money.

You run a tree service, you say? I'll bet that gives you a chance to haul off plenty off wood. Why not run a firewood business during the off months? That's a business where the addition of time and effort really adds value, and it sounds as if at this time of year, you've got nothing but time. Even if you don't have a stockpile of wood right now, wait for the next storm, and people will be literally giving the stuff away. Buck it (that is, cut it to lengths suitable for fireplaces, campfires and stoves, usually about 16 inches), split it, and stack it like a crisscross fire for maximum air circulation. After it dries a while, strip off the bark. (Don't believe people who say leaving the bark on keeps the rain off. Most moisture in the wood is from the sap inside, and that will evaporate faster if you strip the bark. Besides, removing the bark sometimes allows wood to be moved across country lines in areas with Emerald Ash Borer.)

Yeah, you'll have to wait until next year to sell it as "seasoned" firewood, but if you are willing to put the time into delivering and stacking it, people will pay good money for it, and I think you'll find yourself keeping busy next winter.

When your tree service starts up again, make a point of offering to "haul away" trees you remove. You don't have to take time to buck and split them as you go, because that's what you'll do NEXT winter, between deliveries. The winter after that, you'll have plenty of firewood to sell. Consider bundling it in amounts suitable for a single fire, which can be sold to gas stations at far bigger bucks than a cord at a time.

    Good luck!

Hi. You could make a transportable food truck. By making a float and getting some resources you would make money easily. You could get a good baker friend and open a business close to parks on cold days. Have cold chocolates, scones, coffee, etc... Hope this helped. Good luck. :)
