Death metal misconceptions, any thoughts? Why is the genre judged so unfairly ?
Without Judgment, what would we do ? ( haha)
Anyways, legendary death metal band "Death" is one of my all time favorites. Their first major release " Scream Bloody Gore" was a classic staple of death metal. Disgusting lyrics of mutilation and unacceptable social behavior. While i do not "love" these types of lyrics, the music and powerful vocals are still things that i love about that album. My major point is the following: A band with lyrics, that to the untrained ear are the exact of Cannibal Corpse for instance, underwent a major change in lyrical beauty. The first record was by no means a bad one, but you can see an aggressive poetic correlation between the music and the themes that were delivered in later albums up to the glorious "Sound of perseverance". For god's sake, i interpret the song " Bite the Pain" as one about the horrendous act of bullying, and how only the victim knows the pain. Or Lack of Comprehension which is actually a song Opposed to murder! So answer this, those that hate death metal for being all about "killing, sex, drugs, racism", have you ever given bands like these a chance? Or do you just dislike them because of the vocals and harsh playing ( i love them, but i see why someone wouldn't). I'm just trying to prevent people from missing out on great material all because of a misconception that death metal cannot be beautiful . It's like me saying rap music is all about sex, drugs, and money. In most cases it's true, but there are exceptions that would prove me wrong. .

Most folks don't have a critical enough ear to be able to tell what's going on. To them, what may be a beautifully written and performed death metal composition is just incoherent noise to them.

Okay well, ill just give you my reasons for disliking death metal, I know very little about metal to be honest. I know tons of punk bands, have every notable punk bands albums and know all the words by heart to every song by a lot of my favorites. I started listening to poppy Ramones, then clash, dead Kennedys, ext. Ext. and I liked it so much I never bothered getting into metal. Then I liked this guy a lot and we had a mutual interest in punk but he also liked a lot more different stuff so since he was so openinded about listening to punk I asked him what songs by what bands in what genre should I check out. He said metal-black veil brides, pierce the veil, asking Alexander, death metal-design the skyline, I forget the other twos name, he said fake metal was stuff like metallica cause they're poser sell outs. So I went and listened to this stuff and really hated it. And since I was told that's what metal was, and it was very much so about sex and drugs, I never gave it another chance. That's why I wasn't into death metal really, I'm ignorant of metal and I just never bothered after that to listen to it. As for the vocals and harsh playing I have gotten into that more.., but not so much as death metal, its a very hard transition to popish ramones to yelling and alllllll anyway i went to a metal influenced hardcore show and I think I liked the whole loud, angry, moshing, fastness about it. So now I'm more open to the concept of death metal but I haven't really ever bothered to look it up because idk what to listen to.You said "have you ever given bands like these a chance?" well no, because I never knew of such bands (I'm quite bad at utilizing the Internet :P) If there was a death metal band with energetic, non-stupid/creepy/drug/sex lyrics, shortish songs (less than 5 minutes) without long intros than I would listen to them and give them a chance. However all I know about death metal is from a guy I once had a crush on and the creepy guy with a pentagram tattoo on his forehead, illuminati on his cheek, talking to someone loudly about death metal and how he can relate to the mutilation and gore of it all. I realize I probably sound like an idiot but keep in my mind I'm more into punk, hc and rock n roll. But there, that's why I'm judgmental toasted death metal and think it's all satany violentness.
Source(s): I think that made sense.... I don't dislike death metal but I'm too ignorant on the concept to know anything oter than why I don't listen to it however I would be willing to try listening to some death metal bands again - 7 years ago
Couldn't agree more! Chuck publicly spoke out against bands like CC for giving death metal a bad name. People are quick to judge and assume that music is just for goths or serial killers or whatever.
