atmospheric refraction question?

-does atmospheric refraction make the sky look like it curves straight down more than it is.

-I have seen planes going straight in the sky then have seen when they have come from east to west and at the horizon they start going what looks like straight up then actually about straight when they are closer then what looks like straight down when it gets past where you are at.

-are we on the earth sideways or more towards a flatter (not completely flat) within a town.

thank you. I was just wondering this because when looking at the sky it seems like all these don't go together correctly.

Light waves refracting can make for interesting sights.

Here is a website called Atmospheric Optics that shows many odd sightings.

the site spaceweather.com also has a link to the atmospheric optics page if you need it.
