This matter is sort of half and half....
some Messianic Jews (MJs; SDA included) believe much like the Jehova's witnesses (JWs)
-no trinity
-Jesus as Michael
-no hell (denies it's existence)
-future end times, armageddon blabla, and much more.
but some believe like what the Christians believe
-hell (not just hell fire, the concept of it... I mean they acknowledge it exists, but what it exactly is it's up to the person)
-Jesus as God and
-the 2nd person of the trinity.
*pretty much depends on the group you're talking about, Messianic Jews differ in beliefs. If it's the first one listed, then yes, a specific group of MJs are a cult. If the latter, then no.
*Them being legalistic and being self-righteous (trying to follow the law and all) is rather sad and looked down upon... but has no bearing on whether they are a cult or not.

It's more properly called a sect.
That is a group cut off from the main church.
A cult is more properly a group with a single leader.

If people are free to come and go as they please it is not a full blown cult, no matter how much anyone doesn't agree with or like their false teachings.
