How to know if "hanging out" turned into a date?

So me and a friend of mine had plans to hang out Friday night. He knows that I'm really into him. So Friday night rolls around and like I do with moat of my friends, we hang out kn my car until we fifure out what we're gonna do while hanging out. Well we end up going to the movies. Without offering, he goes to the ticket booth and buys both of our tickets. He even let me pick the movie. And he paid for snacks too. Then during the movie he held my hand. After the movie he bought himself and I milkshakes. Then when I took him home (I drove because I have a car) he told me that he likes me. I told my parents and best friends about it, and they all say that it turned into a date. However neither I nor the guy said it was a date. I'd really like some other people's opinions on this.
