I would buy the stencil for the lettering a hobby store carries stencils, and use spray paint for fabrics its holds up to washing You can use a sharpy pen but it will bleed if it gets wet and will not hold up to water You would have to use a fabric pen or spray links below.
You can buy stencils here http://www.michaels.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-...
Some fabric pens you can use: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/fabric-paint-pens
Fabric paint http://www.ebay.com/bhp/fabric-spray-paint.
If you have great free hand drawing skills then no stencil would be needed but for clean lettering I would use the stencil because the fabric ink is permanent
hope it helps

I would stencil and spray paint. Stencil with painters tape to prevent bleeding, and spray from a good distance away to avoid drips.
