Is Stan short for Staniel?

I've always wonder what Stan is short for.

My thinking is Dan is short for Daniel so Stan must be short for Staniel.

    Staniel is not a name at all. Stan is short for Stanley.

    Yes, using that same logic in Daniel, Stan is a short for Staniel.

    This also goes to all names that start with the prefix Stan as in

    -Stanley

    -Stanislaus
