Headset microphone doesn't work?

Hey,

I've been trying to get the microphone of my headset (Philips SHG7980) to work for the last couple of days, but it simply doesn't seem to catch my speech. When I go to the ''recording devices''-section in the audio settings, the bar next to the device only reacts when I touch the microphone. Speaking or snapping fingers has no effect. I tried recording some of my speech, but there was only silence. I've Googled the issue and despite trying the stuff I found, I'm completely stumped. Any idea how to fix this?

My OS is Windows 7, btw. And the sound on the headset works perfectly, the microphone is the only problem.

Update:

Laurence, thank you for the reply. However, I'm afraid the problem hasn't been solved... the mic connects straight to the headset, and since the headset has power I would assume the same goes for the mic. It has been connected to one of the back USB ports, so that shouldn't be an issue. The volume has been set to 100, and I am certain I have enabled this particular mic (since it has the headset name). I'm not certain what you mean by a ''boost'' in reason n.o 3, can you explain it to me in greater detail?

it just sounds like its the wrong level.

this can happen for lots of reasons

1 it is powered and you forgot to power it

2 it is powered and the power supply is too feeble. for example a front usb socket is weaker than one on the rear.

3 it has a boost which is not yet Ticked see recording devices

4 it has a volume slider which is DOWN see recording volume button in sound devices

5 your mixer is not mixing this input, but a different one also called MIC which is one of your other mic's eg your PINK socket or your Digital MIC and NOT your USB mic. you can usually set recording properties to SHOW hidden Mixer inputs

    this might help
