how to calculate the triangle?

okay i just need to figure out how to calculate the side of a triangle. i'm in 8th grade, regular math, and i have my math exam tomorrow and i NEED to know this.

my review problem asks:

"a 10 foot ladder is leaning against a house. the base of the ladder is 5 feet from the side of the house. at what height does the ladder touch the house?" we've already been taught this but i kinda have a bad teacher and she didnt help me when i struggled with the topic, so i never really learned the info.

idc if you want to give me the answer to the problem, you can, but all i really need to know is how to solve questions like that in a way an 8th grader can understand.

thank you!

    Hey, are you talking about right-triangles, since the house and ground form a 90 angle?

    Then just remember that Leg1 ^2 + Leg2 ^2 = Hypotenuse ^2

    So in your case it would be:

    5^2 + x^2 = 10^2

    25 + x^2 = 100

    x^2= 75

    x = square root 75 = 5 * square root 3

    Good luck for the exam friend, and rest well, math comes from mind, no help memorizing... I just take it to a puzzle and take help from those near me...
