The Southern Vampire Mysteries?
I love True Blood, very disappointed in the fact that the next season will be the last. Now my question is, How do the two compare? Are they very similar? Or does the show just roughly follow the series? If I decide to read them, should I start from the beginning? Or From where the TV series ended off? And lastly how is the series? Writing and story, if story is vastly different?

The show roughly follows the series.
There is quite a bit in the books that wasn't in the show, but there is quite a bit in the show that wasn't in the books also...
I've enjoyed both the books and the show. Not sure if it's because I started reading the series before I started watching it, but I liked the story-line of the books more.
If you don't expect them to be too similar, I bet you can enjoy both too. :D
Start with the 1st book. It's called -Dead Until Dark-

The show absolutely ruined the books! They are hardly anything alike. They are completely different to my eyes. I watched the first season then gave up because they just completely ignored most of what made the series good in the first place.
If you read the books, start from the beginning, because there are character changes and storylines in the series that didn't happen in the books. And you'll be amazed at what Tara is really like.

The show sort of follows the series. The books are first person from Sookie's viewpoint, so they've added a lot of things to the show, such as that whole MaryAnn storyline. Tara is nonexistent in the books, as is Lafayette except in the first one.
I would start with book one and go from there. I enjoy both the books and the show.
