Seahawks clinch the #1 NFC playoff seed with:

    (1) one more win or tie (Cardinals, Rams); OR

    (2) one more 49ers tie or loss (Falcons, @Cardinals).

The best the Panthers or Saints can do as NFC South division champ is tie the Seahawks with a 12-4 record, and the Seahawks have already clinched head-to-head tie-breakers with either of those teams, by virtue of regular season victories (@Panthers in week 1, and vs. Saints in week 13). Therefore, the Seahawks don't need the Panthers or Saints to tie or lose another game (although at least one is guaranteed to tie or lose another game, since they play each other in week 16). The Seahawks also don't have to worry about any potential three-team ties at 12-4 among division winners, because no team from the NFC North or East can finish better than 10-6. If the Seahawks finish 12-4, they need the 49ers to have another tie or loss for the Seahawks to win the division, because if both teams are tied at 12-4, the 49ers win the division, based on a head-to-head split and a better division record (5-1 vs. 3-3). If the 49ers win the NFC West, the Panthers or Saints could win the #1 NFC playoff seed at 12-4, since both the Panthers and Saints beat the 49ers head-to-head during the regular season. For the 49ers to win the #1 NFC playoff seed, they would have to win 2 more games, have the Seahawks lose 2 more games, and have both the Panthers and Saints tie or lose one more game (not necessarily to each other).

Either they must win one of teir two remainig games, or both the 49ers and the Panthers must lose one of theirs.

The Saints are irrelevant here - they can only tie the Seahawks, but would still lose out because they lost in Seattle.

They need to win one of their two remaining games to clinch home field through the playoffs. That's the easy part.

The hard part is waiting to see if the league will come up with a strategy (ie Jerome Bettis) to take it away from them.
