What's so original about the Harry Potter series?

Evil versus good isn't original neither is discovering your magical powers and being whisked off to a school.

So tell me, what's original about Harry Potter?

That's a very superficial look at Harry Potter. Most books have reoccurring themes and no book is completely original. I wonder if you've actually ever read it?

The seven books fit together like a puzzle. Seemingly small details over six books all tie together in the seventh. There are so many things that seem inconsequential that actually make all the difference to the last book. In many aspects it is almost a detective story for the readers.

J.K.Rowling has also very realistically portrayed friendships between teenagers. As well as relationships with teachers, family and characters who dislike one another. She also shows the journey of children turning into adolescents in a very realistic way, (regardless to whether it is set in a wizarding world). She makes us love and sympathise with the characters and to hate and feel annoyed with them too. Her writing is very, very powerful because it represents real people.

Yes it does teach of good versus evil but it also teaches of loyalty, friendship, justice. It makes children understand that death is inevitable and good acts are rewarded. Most importantly J.K.Rowling teaches the readers about the importance of being equals and treating everyone as equals. Many people have likened Voldemort to Hitler. And they would be right. Voldemort believes that people of different birth are low and deserve to be killed or punished whilst treating other 'beings' as servants and believing himself to be more powerful. It actually represents racism and inequality just as Jews has been persecuted by Hitler. She also teaches that tyranny will never succeed so long as there are those who fight for justice.

'There are all kinds of courage. It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but as much to stand up to our friends.' Dumbledore, Philosophers Stone.

'It's our choice Harry, that's shows what we truly are, far more than our abilities.' Chamber of Secrets, Dumbledore.

'If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.' Goblet of Fire, Sirius.

'Understanding is the first step to acceptance, and only with acceptance, can there be recovery.' Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore.

'Voldemort himself created his worst enemy, just as tyrants everywhere do! Have you any idea how much tyrants fear the people they oppress? All of them realise that one day, amongst their many victims there is sure to be one who rises against them and strikes back!' Half Blood Prince, Dumbledore.

Are those not words of wisdom and teachings that should be listened to? It may not be entirely original, but as I said no book is. These books may be a fantasy but they cover all aspects.

Originality is not a bellwether for success.

The books hit a cord with the current generation of readers.

What was original about the Goosebumps series in the 1990s?

How did they differ from the "Weird Fantasy" comic books of the 1950s?

The idea of good versus evil is as old as story telling itself.

THAT is not what makes the books so popular.

of course, it's not literary a reach, valuable book. not one that can be a study reference in universities or even schools! but as an entertainment resource, it's a giant entertaining series! and it seems to be favored by many.

i used to read them a very long time ago, but as much as i remember,

1st. The magic school: it was a really new idea at that time (even if it wasn't, it was the best way to show that). nowadays, there are plenty of books, movies and animations using that idea, though.

2nd. writing bravely: Rowling's style of writing was so unique. not fitting any writing theme. that's why some say her book needed editing page by page. 'cause she didn't follow any of remaining styles out there.

also, she didn't use long descriptions like for example Tolkien did (no offense to him, though. he's a legendary writer.) yet she described everything so clearly and effortlessly. and i remember i watched the 2nd movie and decided to read the series. which means i started reading the whole series, only when the 5th book had already come out. so after i finished the 5th book, one day my friend told me: "good news, they're making a movie of 5th book." and then i said "I've already watched it!". i really thought i had watched it. i even had every single scene in front of my eyes so clear that i could describe them! poor me, i called her later to say she was right lol

3rd. Characters were so strong. i think she said she based them on her real life friends and family. so i guess it was a good idea. 'cause you knew every character (and there were plenty of them) so good that during conversations, Rowling didn't even need to mention who's talking.

that's as much as i could remember.

If you're thinking purely on the lines of basic themes, there's nothing original about the Harry Potter series. There have been no new themes in literature for about the last two thousand years. Further, Harry Potter draws upon a considerable amount of fairly recent source material: you'll find parallels in Roald Dahl and Tolkien to name two. This doesn't mean the author is guilty of any sort of plagiarism, all writers are influenced by others.

Who cares how original it is? It's how epic it is that's what captivates us. Sure, there are plenty of books about schools of magic and good vs evil but can you say that they have all succeeded exploring/exploiting/whatyoucallit those themes? (plus most of them are inspired by Harry Potter anyway)

Anyway Harry Potter isn't just about magic and bad people fighting. There's love, politics, friendship, high school life, racism, annoying people, etc etc plus a heck of a plot.

Source(s): Very miffed HP fan. Don't take it personally

The stile. It is hard to explain. Very large numbers of kids bought the book and read and do read them. That is stile! And as parents said. If we can get them to read we don't care if we like the book or not. A great author has a stile that sells books because people wish to read them. And that is a great artist with a pen. Like his works or not!

Reading was at a low, nobody seemed to be interested, especially children, so JKR wrote a childrens story, a series where the children and the character would grow up together.

    Now that WAS original.

Of course the book was badly-written, it needed editing page by page, but it was the idea that sold the book.

Luck, like sh*t, happens now and then.
