Foreigners living in Dubai : What are some of the challenges a new foreigner can face in Dubai?

I have been offered a job in Dubai. I am from Pakistan. What are some of the challenges I can face ? Also what are my chances of getting a new job if Igraduated from South East Asia

What about racism against Pakistanis?

Cost of living ? For example if my salary is 2000 dirhams . How much can I save after deducting travel , food expense , transportation, and other costs such as clothes , shoes etc. ?

What about weather ?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thank you.

2000 dirhams a month is poverty by UAE standards. Maids get paid about 2000 dirhams a month, or at least that is the kind of salary they are offered in the classifieds. In Dubai things can get expensive if you don't know your way around, its a big city and some parts of the city have more expensive shops than others. If you want to eat things like shawarmas or burgers you're in luck, there's a LOT of cheap little shops in the UAE that sell those kinds of foods. Hardee's, McDonalds, Pizza Hut and all that might be too expensive for you in the long run. The supermarkets have reasonable prices, don't worry about that. The metro and buses will be your cheapest options for transport. Weather is not too bad, you get used to it, as long as you have a good icy Pepsi at hand when you get home. This is so funny, I was sleeping with the aircon off for a few days in the summer, because I forgot about the aircon when I arrived, so actually the heat is not that bad, but aircon helps you to sleep longer and better. Don't worry about discrimination, the people you will see in the streets are mostly Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Filipinos...everyone really gets along well.

Your life will be without outdoor fun for the most part. You bring your own clothing, shoes and hygiene stuff from Pakistan if you can. That way you can save some money. If you travel by either bus or metro transport is cheap.

It is hot but bearable if you spend more time inside your office otherwise hellish for outdoor workers. At night warm temperature.

It fluctuates between hot and warm in days. No sea breeze and such. Being in air conditioned is the only way to feel sanity.

As for racism, well, Emiratis are just a minority for the most part you will come across people from Sub continent. You will always earn less than those citizens from other developed countries. 2000 dhr is peanuts and I am more than sure you will quit your job after a couple of months when you see you are not going to save much and then you have harsh climate/long working hours to deal with on a daily basis.

Hmm, I am unsure if it'll be of any help but I'll tell you what I know.

The kind of challenges you'll face will depend on the nature of your job. Going to work there as a laborer vs. going there to join the corporate world vs. starting your own business there, all have experiences that are worlds apart.

There is some general racism against South Asians in the middle east mainly due to the number of people going there for menial jobs that pay peanuts. It may not be as noticeable if you socialize only amongst people from the same (I apologize) "racial background".

For most part, as long as you keep up your good behavior it'll be politically incorrect for racist people to express their opinion openly. Having said this, you will also have to consciously make an effort to be politically correct in your actions and words (like any other place) in case you are not from a multicultural background.

Addressing your second issue; how much you save depends on the kind of lifestyle you choose to lead. People living there make anywhere between a thousand and hundreds of thousands of Dirhams. So if you like saving money, a cheaper airlines will be favorable but if you travel business class you're less likely to be racially abused.

Last but not the least, it is hot from mid May to mid September. It's cold (not terribly) from mid December to almost mid March and it's very pleasant in between. There are dust storms through out the year though and it rains once or twice during the change of seasons. Will definitely need a quilt for the nights and Lots of sunscreen all year around.

    Hope this helps.

    Good Luck With Living There!

I don't understand. You got offered a job already and ask now how your chances are to get a new job? What's about fulfilling your offered contract first and stay with the same employer for 2 years. Then go from there.

Where did you graduate from? Highschool?

AED 2.000 are sufficient to live a low lifestyle, rent a bedspace only and live of the basics. Regarding UAE standart an income of AED 3.000 is considered poverty.

The weather is hot during summer and warm during winter.

You won't face any racism as long as you are a law abiding person and respect others regardless of nationality.

One of the challenges an Asian new to Dubai may face is to avoid falling for cheating own country men.
