friend doesn't want to report his income to the irs?
My friend started a small company this year. I asked if he had kept track of his expenses for his taxes, but he said he wasn't going to report his income this year, since he hadn't made that much (under 10k). Most of his customers paid by check.
He is going to report his income from his part-time job, I'm just worried about him getting prosecuted for not reporting the other amount and the irs being able to plainly see his deposits.
Any words of advice I can give him?

When his customers get audited, the IRS will notice those checks and will back track to him. If his customers are businesses themselves, they will issue him 1099-Misc forms.
By the time the IRS catches him, the tax bill will double or triple.

Not reporting is tax evasion. Check out Lauryn Hill, Wesley Snipes, Al Capone. Once he is caught in addition to federal and state taxes there is a penalty for not paying.
