how does localizing anime movies in the west work?
I know I sound stupid but that isn't my point. I JUST found out today Rebellion(Magi Madoka) was playing at a nearby theater and I didn't know theaters in the west showed anime movies so I was wondering on how they decide what movies to show and what not.( I am hoping they'll do Persona Spring of Rebirth too)

Aniplex owns the rights to the Madoka franchise.
They offered the movie up to any theater that wants to show it. There is a price tag for it. So whatever theater was like "okay, we'll pay $$$$ to show this indie movie" was then put on the very small list of theaters. Most theaters don't bother with something so niche because they can't make a profit. But some theaters specialize in nicheness or had many people come and request that they obtain the movie.
Theaters find out about the movie through a distribution company. Aniplex hires them to send out emails to every theater in their network for the oportunity.
The distribution company is also the one that handles the times, pricing, and making sure the film arrives.
Persona 3's movies won't get a theater release.
1. It's not licensed.
2. It doesn't have a pre-existing TV show.
Something that will be getting a theater release is AnoHana.
Because it meets those 2 requirements.
