These are uncommon houseplants in Southern California. there are several hundred species most of which like full sun. They grow from medium size shrubs to small trees. More information here: http://www.garden-flowers.net/Banksia.htm

No,banksia is an Australian native and likes full sun and not too much attention such as fertilizers etc.You can can a native mix to use on it though I don't know where you would find that in the US.
Edit: Banksias grow to 5 metres tall,it would lift the roof off your house, lol.I have them growing all around my house here in Sydney.

I'm agreeing with the others and adding some emphatic touches.
GET ALL THOUGHTS OF GROWING BANKSIAS AS HOUSE PLANTS OUT OF YOUR MIND.
DO NOT THINK OF GROWING PROTEAS AS HOUSE PLANTS.
DO NOT DIVIDE BY ZERO.
DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS THAT START WITH "WHY" ITS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD.

I've grown them from seed outdoors in Maine. It's very easy and they take care of themselves. They are an annual, so you just need to sow fresh seed every year. I don't deadhead them because I like the pretty, star-shaped seed heads.
