I just got my first cat for Christmas. How short are you supposed to trim the whiskers?

You're not supposed to trim a cat's whiskers at all! They use them to check whether or not they can fit through a small gap, so couldn't go without them. Many cats dislike having their whiskers touched anyway because they're able to detect changes in air pressure due to the very high sensitivity.
A cat's whiskers will grow out and shed, so they don't need trimming anyway.
Hope this helps.

Don't trim a cat's whiskers! If they get too long, see a vet to make sure everything's ok, but do NOT just trim them regularly like you could a cat's claws or fur! They're extremely sensitive and will hurt if you clip them, and whiskers help a cat to find its way around in the dark or if it is asleep, it can tell if something or someone is nearby.

Cat's whiskers should never be trimmed: they grow to exactly the correct length and stop growing. Cats' whiskers look good at the correct length, but stupid if you trim them.
A cat's whiskers are used to tell the cat whether it can get through a narrow space: if you trim them any shorter they may get stuck in a hole in the fence.

Cats' whiskers are never meant to be trimmed at all. Cats use their whiskers for a number of important functions. DO NOT TRIM YOUR CAT'S WHISKERS EVER. Cats do not need to be bathed/groomed/trimmed the way many people do with their dogs. Occasionally, a long haired cat may need to be taken to a groomer if clipping is recommended by your vet. Brushing a cat can be helpful in reducing shedding and hairballs. But for the most part, cats take care of all of their grooming needs themselves.

Never trim whiskers! So cruel and they are a sensitive area likeour nose or ears
They use them to sense air currents in the dark

Why would you need to do that? They need their whiskers the length they are so they can judge if they can fit in places they go, like if they try to fit in a small space if their whiskers touch the edges it means the rest of their body wont fit either, if that makes sense?

Never Trim them! They have narrow and long eye sight... whiskers help their balance, and feel things they cant see to the left and right of them.
