According to the Sunni's, among other things, Shia's perform 'Shirk', the unforgivable sin by distributing the creators (Allah's) attributes to the created. Shia's believe that Prophets/Imams do not ever sin and cannot commit mistakes; to them, the Prophets and Imams are perfect. This is a core belief of Shiaism. They therefore worship the graves of their Imams.
However, given the fact that Shiaism is nearly as old as the Sunni beliefs, certain elements of shiaism has over the years influenced the Sunni world too. Sunni's from certain parts of the world particularly from the Indian subcontinent worship graves.
This was unexpectable to Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (born 1703 in Uyaynah; died 1792) who was a theologian from modern day Saudia Arabia. He influenced the local amirs to eradicate all the graves and tomb stones of the companions of the Prophet many of whom are considered by the Shia's as their Imams. This was so that people do not worship graves and as a result of that, the Saudi people and the monarchy arent only hated by the Shia's but also by certain Sunni's too. This gave rise to 'Wahabism'.

There are 4 main sects:
Sunni-After Prophet Mohammad(PBUH) died, his successor (The Caliph) would be Abu Bakr, then Omar then Uthman then Ali
***
Shia-After the Prophet Mohammad(PBUH) died, his Cousin Ali would be the Caliph and Ali's descendants would continue after him
***
Khawarji-Initially supported Ali being the Caliph but then deemed him not religious enough, they ended up assassinating Ali. Belief that the rightful Caliph should be the holiest leader.
***
Sufism-"Folk Islam" origin in Central Asia. Parts of traditional Islam have been removed and parts of Folk Turkish religion added, Less strict and follows teachings of Rumi as part of the faith (equivalent to a Prophet not a Scholar like most Muslims)
***
Wahabis and Salafis are Sunni Muslim Movements.
The Branches of Sunnism are Hanafi,Hanabli,Maliki and Chafi'i
Barelvis are basically Indian Sufis.

Salam.
I think Muslims need to focus more on commonalities rather than differences..

Even if you have to study the differences, you need to study the sects by the works of the subscribers of that faith.. And, I assure you, the statements like; "They believe in this, they do that.." are usually false.. For people are misinformed, they disinform others..
which is the opposite of what is suggested in hadiths;
A sunni hadith;
"It’s enough as a sin for a person to narrate everything they hear."
A shia hadith;
"What distance is between the right and the falsehood?" they asked. "Four fingers," He replied. "What you see with your own eye is the right. You may hear a lot of falsehoods with your ear."
You see, in their origins, they have commonalities.. And Quran is shared by all which says; "O ye who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, lest ye harm people unwittingly, and afterwards become regretful for what ye have done."
So, if you have to study sects, you need to do it with the people subscribing to those sects..
However, I suggest you study commonalities first which is the root of Islam;

Islam has nothing to do with sects
mentioned in verse 159 of surah #6:
'As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast NO PART IN THEM IN
THE LEAST, their affair is with Allah, He will in the end tell them
the truth of all that they did.''
You just follow what is mentioned in Quran and authentic hadith
