Why is "liberal" a bad word?

“Liberal” and “Republican” have only been contradictory words since Reagan purged liberals from the party. A liberal Republican by the name of Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves and granted blacks personhood (with the unfortunate addition of corporate personhood that modern Republicans support). He was from the north, which has been liberal since the days of the Revolution (the Boston Tea Party was in the North) and continues to be so. Liberals gave blacks and women the right to vote (while the modern GOP just gutted the Voting Rights Act). Liberals created Social Security—a program that lifted millions of elderly Americans out of poverty. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Violence Against Women Act (that the GOP let expire from 2011-2013).

Conservatives opposed every one of those things. They fought every one tooth and nail. Conservative southern Dixiecrats of the 60s before Nixon's "Southern Strategy" even filibustered the Civil Rights Act claiming they were "supporting nature" and “defending states’ rights”--the same argument used by conservatives against same-sex marriage nowadays.

So why isn’t “conservative” a bad word?

"Liberal" was a philosophical word which was to be applied to social attitudes and societal actions as a whole. - When translated into meeting those objectives through the force of government (viz. it becomes political) it is anathema to personal freedom.

Neither are "bad" words, it's just that they are used to the extremes these days.

Liberal in the US has come to mean government control over individuals lives. It use to mean the individual has freedom and the right to prosperity, however that is no longer the case.

I actually think LBJ pulled liberals from the republicans party, as opposed to Reagan pushing them. He signed the civil rights act.

But yeah, a liberal is really someone who prefers new solutions to combat modern problems as opposed to the old ways.

The reason conservative isn't a bad word because, we don't say it with a sneer or distain. But the other side dose with liberal and it became a bad word.

    "Permissive" is generally used pejoratively.

I find little difference in the word "liberal" and the word "permissive."

Because the ultra-wealthy paid Fox News a billion dollars to convince their idiotic viewers that it is a bad word.
