You can go to www.fluteworld.com and look over the entry-level flutes that are all on either side of $500. I would advise the Jupiter 500 series, if pressed for just one. HOWEVER - you should find a good teacher first - they might have different opinions, or a lead on a good used flute for you. Without a teacher, you will honk away for days before you produce any kind of sound - and will be ingraining terrible habits as you go. Yes, the fingering system is hot hard, but your set-up =- your posture and especially your EMBOUCHURE - to way you use your lips, jaw, etc. - are crucial in flute playing. So - find a degreed, experienced professional flutist/teacher - not hard to do -we are everywhere. Good luck.

Any flute brand would be good, just don't get it online, because then if you break it most stores will charge you extra. I suggest nickel body and nickel plated keys. Here are brands I suggest:
Armstrong
Jupiter
Yamaha
I suggest you get a teacher or a instructor for help and special guidence. Meyer music has all of these.
