How long can sifted sugar sit and still be sifted?

I am planning on making a lot of icing tomorrow. The recipe calls for sifted confectioners' sugar. Can I sift it all tonight and begin making the icing tomorrow, or would that defeat the whole purpose of sifting? Or, how long will confectioners' sugar "stay sifted?"

until it packs itself back down! main thing about sifting the powder sugar is to get the lumps out so you don't have to mash each one of them!! faster! than beating them out or taking a spoon spatula or whatever and mashing them out.

over night is fine! Jo and I used to sift 50 pounds at a time for a week! that was for the bakery and we used that much and more on an average week, so on HolyDay holidays, we did about 100 pounds!

and you think you are doing a lot of icing? think again!

    You could sift it now.

You just need to get out any lumps. The sugar does not have to be light and airy like a sifted flour would have to be for a recipe.

I'd sift it before making the icing tomorrow.
