I think it is your brain sending those thought to your heart causing adrenalin. It is basically anxiety.

A broken heart is so powerful and felt in the chest because our mind is filled up with so many expectations, false hopes and lies that leads us to believe this will all make us happier and this feeling grows and grows bigger and bigger then Bam it hits us. The mind might still be in denial but the heart knows the truth and gets the feeling first before the mind can fully except it.

Source(s): My mind.. Because my heartbreak was Insane and still is around.
  • Honestly I think it's just the whole "broken heart" thing makes your brain physically makes you feel that you have a broken heart because that phrase exists and is used a lot, if that makes any sense. But if you're asking what that feeling is then it's anxiety.

Heart/lungs are considered "organs of expression" - they express your emotions.

The weird problems start when the heart/lungs express your unconscious emotions (which they always do to some degree). But fairly neurotic people are burdened with fake heart attacks and asthma and never really know why because the emotions being expressed are unconscious.
